Soak the seeds overnight in warm water. Plant the seeds outdoors directly in the garden February and April when you plant peas. Fava beans can handle cold weather down to 20 F, but they can not take hot summers. In the South, Fava beans do well when planted in the fall, between October and November, or in the early spring in March. Plants can grow 12 to 72" tall.
Requires rich fertile soil in a well drained location in the garden. Apply much and grass clippings, or straw around base of plant.
Keep the soil consistently moist. Water only in the morning. Water well during dry and hot spells.
Use RootBlast, Vegetable Alive, and Slow Release Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Periodically apply Miracle Gro.
Pull up the plant when the lower pods are full and dry and the upper pods are fully developed. Remove the beans from the pods and protective coating before use.
