1963 All-America Selections Winner! 65 days. Lactuca sativa. Open Pollinated. Buttercrunch Lettuce. The plant produces high yields of dark green butterhead lettuce. It has a mild buttery flavored taste with no bitterness. The broad green leaves are delicious, but the best part is the heart of loosely folded leaves and thick, crisp, tender ribs. Great for salads and garnishes. Heat Tolerant. Slow to bolt. Suitable for greenhouse production. An excellent choice for home gardens, greenhouses, and market growers. Developed by George Raleigh of Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, USA. United States Department of Agriculture, PI 536804.

Butterhead Lettuce Seed Planting Information:

Butterhead lettuce can be grown anywhere as long as you have composted soil. Lettuce grows best if planted indoors and transplanted outdoors in early spring. Lettuce does well in composted soil. It does not do well in clay soil. Make successive plantings. Plant your seeds indoors 3 to 6 weeks before setting outside. Lettuce will better tolerate heat if plants are well thinned and air can circulate around them. Spring planting should occur as soon as soil can be worked, and fall planting done around June or July. Plants grow 2 - 10" tall.

Soil Requirements:

Requires fertile sandy soil in a well drained location in the garden. Apply much and grass clippings, or straw around base of plant.

Water Requirements:

Keep soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Water well during dry and hot spells. Water in the morning only, on the side of the plants and not directly on the leaves.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use RootBlast, Vegetable Alive, and Slow Release Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Apply Miracle Gro periodically.

Harvest Tips:

Pick outer leaves of butterhead lettuce, or cut the entire head about 1" above the soil. A new head may grow.
