95 days. Allium cepa. Open Pollinated. Ailsa Craig Exhibition Onion. The plant produces excellent yields of huge 2 to 6 lb sweet onions. This Spanish type onion has a unique mildly sweet flavor. Perfect for soups, sandwiches, salads, and cooking. Impress your neighbors and try growing a World Record size onion. Earlier than other Spanish types. Tolerates cool weather well. Suitable for Northern regions. Similar to Kelsae Sweet Giant Onion. Excellent choice for home gardens. This variety is named after Ailsa, a small round island off the coast of Scotland that is nearly solid rock. An 1887 heirloom from South Ayrshire, Scotland. A long day variety.

Onion Seed Planting Information:

Onions seeds should be planted indoors 6 to 8 weeks before ground can be worked. You can also plant seeds directly in the garden. Spring planting should occur as soon as soil can be worked. Keep free from weeds. You need long sunny days to grow large onions. Shallots are very close to garlic and are very easy to grow. Plants can grow 8 to 12" tall.

Soil Requirements:

Requires fertile soil in a well drained location in the garden. Apply much and grass clippings, or straw around base of plant.

Water Requirements:

Keep seedlings and transplants consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Water well during dry and hot spells.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use RootBlast, Vegetable Alive, and Slow Release Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Apply Miracle Gro every 2 weeks.

Harvest Tips:

You can harvest onion for their green stems (scallions) at anytime. Cut the green stems with garden scissors when tops are 4 - 8" tall. For bulb product, let the tops dry up themselves before digging them up. Spread bulbs on ground for 3 to 5 days to cure.

I grow them in southern California and they do just fine. I plant in November and March for a staggered harvest

Very good onion (big and sweet) for the North! Living in North Dakota by the Canadian border, this long day onion grows great. Any one living in states North of Ohio and "in Canada" should be growing this one. Jim Dufty, Bottineau, ND.
