Kale Planting Information:

Kale is also called Borecole in the United Kingdom. You can harvest Kale between December and April in the south, where it is used as a winter green. Kale is a hardy plant and does well in very hot weather. It also does well in very cold weather and can be left out in the garden all winter. You can have successive plantings throughout the year. Plant the seeds in August for a fall and winter harvest. In the South, you can plant as late as October for a winter harvest. Kale seeds are usually planted directly in the garden. For spring planting, plant seeds 30 days before the last frost, and 70 days before the first autumn frost for a fall crop. Plants can grow 12 to 18" tall.

Soil Requirements:

Requires fertile soil in a well-drained location in the garden. Apply mulch, grass clippings, or straw around the base of the plant.

Water Requirements:

Keep soil consistently moist. Water well during dry and hot spells.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use Slow Release (6 Month) Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Apply Miracle-Gro Liquid Fertilizer every two weeks.

Harvest Tips:

You can cut leaves as you need them if you want the plant to produce more leaves, or you can cut the entire plant at ground level.
