110 days. Allium cepa. Open Pollinated. Southport White Globe Onion. The plant produces excellent yields of medium size onions. It is a firm and pungent onion that has a crisp and mild flavor. This Spanish type onion is grown for commercial production. Perfect for soups, salads, and cooking. One of the best storage keepers. Also known as Silver Ball Onion and White Rocca Onion. It is named after a town in Connecticut, Southport, and grown along Connecticut's Mill River. Southport was known as the Onion Capital during the Civil War, and pickled onions were used to keep scurvy at bay. It can be grown in just about any climate, but it is particularly noted for its ability to thrive in cooler weather. An excellent choice for home gardens, market growers, and open field production. A long day onion for the Northern States. Cold Tolerant. An heirloom variety dating back to 1906. United States Department of Agriculture, PI 546207. A variety from the USA.

Onion Planting Information:

Onion seeds should be planted indoors for 6 to 8 weeks before the ground can be worked. You can also plant seeds directly in the garden. Spring planting should occur as soon as soil can be worked. Keep free from weeds. You need long sunny days to grow large onions. Shallots are very close to garlic and are very easy to grow. Plants can grow 8 to 12" tall.

Soil Requirements:

Requires rich fertile soil in a well drained location in the garden. Apply mulch, grass clippings, or straw around the base of the plant.

Water Requirements:

Keep seedlings and transplants consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Water well during dry and hot spells.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use Slow Release (6 Month) Fertilizer when planting outdoors. Apply Miracle Gro every 2 weeks.

Harvest Tips:

You can harvest onions for their green stems (scallions) at any time. Cut the green stems with garden scissors when tops are 4 - 8" tall. For bulbs, let the tops dry up themselves before digging them up. Spread bulbs on the ground for 3 to 5 days to cure.
