It is a popular cotton variety prized for home gardens, school projects, ornamental interest (attractive flowers and unique bolls), dried arrangements, and natural fiber crafts. It offers a connection to historical and sustainable textile practices without needing chemical dyes. Naturally colored cotton is now very rare. Before the Civil War, slaves grew green, blue, yellow, and pink cotton. This is a family heirloom from Erlene Melancon of East Texas. She has spun the green cotton for years, and her grandmother used colored cotton in quilts. Naturally colored cottons (green, blue, yellow, pink, and brown) were more common before the Civil War and industrialization, when white cotton and chemical dyes became dominant. Colored varieties are now rare and valued by seed savers, hand-spinners, quilters, and those interested in sustainable or historical textiles. An excellent choice for home gardens. Cotton Planting Information:

One of the easiest specialty plants to grow. Kids will love growing them. Cotton does best in warm weather regions. Plant your seeds indoors for school projects 4 to 6 weeks before setting in the garden. When seedlings are 4" to 6" tall, transplant them into larger pots so roots can grow properly. Plant directly in the spring garden when the night temperature is above 50 degrees. Plants can grow 4 ft tall.

Soil Requirements:

Requires fertile soil in a well-drained location in the garden. Apply mulch, grass clippings, or straw around the base of the plant.

Water Requirements:

Water during dry and hot spells.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use Slow Release (6 Month) Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Periodically apply Miracle-Gro Liquid Fertilizer.

Harvest Tips:

Hand remove cotton from the plant when the cotton pods open.
