80 days. Beta vulgaris. Open Pollinated. Long Season Lutz Beet. The plant produces good yields of giant 6" diameter dark red beets. Whether the beets are young or old, small or large, they remain tender all summer and fall and keep in fine condition all winter too. It stores well for several months after harvest. Cold Tolerant. Also known as Lutz Green Leaf Beet and Winterkeeper Lutz Beet. Try growing a World Record Giant Beet. An excellent choice for home gardens.

Beet Seeds Planting Information:

Beets do not do well in poor soil or clay soil, so prepare the soil by adding compost and manure. They thrive in cooler regions. Plant your seeds outdoors directly in the garden. Planting should occur as soon as soil can be worked and 1 week after last frost. Plant in 2 to 3 weeks intervals for a steady harvest until about 2 months before first killing frost in the fall. Plants can grow 2" to 12" tall.

Soil Requirements:

Requires loose fertile soil that is slightly alkaline in a well drained location in the garden. Apply much and grass clippings, or straw around base of plant.

Water Requirements:

Keep soil uniformly moist and from drying out.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use RootBlast, Vegetable Alive, and Slow Release Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Periodically apply Miracle Gro.

Harvest Tips:

Dig or pull roots when 2" or greater. You can harvest beets for greens at any time. Leave fall crop in the ground until needed or when soil begins to freeze.

I orginally planted the Long Season Lutz Beets on April 3, 2010 and not one seed germinated. I replanted the same seeds on May 2, 2010 and noticed sprouts on June 1, 2010. They were planted in the same place, the only difference is that we had some very warm weather. ANYWAY - they did germinate.
