Radicchio can be harvested between December and April in the south. It requires a long cool growing season. You can have successive plantings throughout the year. Plant in August for fall and winter harvest. In the South, you can plant as late as October for winter harvest. To ensure a crop, cut the plant to the ground in early fall so that the dark red heads can form. For spring planting, plant seeds 30 days before the last frost, and 70 days before the first autumn frost for a fall crop. Plants can grow 12 - 18" tall.
Requires fertile soil in a well drained location in the garden. Apply much and grass clippings, or straw around base of plant.
Keep soil consistently moist. Water well during dry and hot spells.
Use RootBlast, Vegetable Alive, and Slow Release Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Apply Miracle Gro periodically.
You can cut leaves as you need them if you want the plant to produce more leaves, or you can cut the entire plant at ground level.
