130 days. Gossypium hirsutum. Open Pollinated. Nankeen Brown Cotton. The plant produces good yields of naturally brown color cotton. This heirloom variety comes from the Mansfield State Commemorative Area, Mansfield, Louisiana, and dates back to Pre-1860. Cotton was grown in the Mansfield area for making slave clothing. It grows well in poor dry soil and appears to have slightly better insect resistance. An excellent choice for home gardens and market growers. United States Department of Agriculture, PI 528418.

Cotton Seed Planting Information:

One of the easiest specialty plants to grow. Kids will love growing them. Cotton does best in warm weather regions. For school projects, plant your seeds indoors 4 to 6 weeks before setting in garden. When seedlings are 4" to 6" tall, transplant them into larger pots so roots can grow properly. Plant directly in the garden in spring when night time temperature are above 50 degrees. Plants can grow 4 ft tall.

Soil Requirements:

Requires rich fertile soil in a well drained location in the garden. Apply much and grass clippings, or straw around base of plant.

Water Requirements:

Water during dry and hot spells.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use RootBlast, Vegetable Alive, and Slow Release Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Periodically apply Miracle Gro.

Harvest Tips:

Hand remove cotton from plant when cotton pods opens.

Wow - this cotton is such a beautiful brown.  When our 4-year old brought some in the house I was amazed at the beautiful color.  With green-cotton (which we also grow), it seems to be half-white/half-green, but with the brown cotton it was mostly brown, and so beautiful! (though I recommend growing some of both because the green cotton seemed more productive for us earlier in the season)
