85 days. Capsicum annuum. Open Pollinated. Tam Jalapeno Pepper. The plant produces high yields of 3" long by 1" wide Jalapeno peppers. Peppers are mildly hot, have thick walls, and turn from green to deep red when they mature. The plant has green stems, green leaves, and white flowers. Perfect for salsa, canned, pickling, stuffing, roasting, and stirfries. A good freezing variety too. The plant provides good protection from sunscald. Heat Tolerant. Drought Tolerant. Texas A&M University (TAM) developed this variety to be milder than other Jalapenos. A variety from the USA. Disease Resistant: PVY. Scoville Heat Units: 1,500.

Hot Pepper Seed Planting Information:

Some hot pepper varieties come from tropical humid regions and some varieties come from dry desert regions. The temperature, moisture, and air circulation all play a role in growing plants from seeds. Too little heat, too much moisture, and lack of air circulation will cause poor results. Do not use jiffy peat pots, plugs, or potting soil as the soil becomes too dry or too wet, which can lead to disease and fungus. We have experienced disease and low germination when using these types of products. Use Miracle Gro Seed Starting Material for best germination results. Plants can grow 1 to 7 ft tall.

Soil Requirements:

Requires fertile soil in a well drained location in the garden. Apply mulch, grass clippings, or straw around the base of the plant.

Water Requirements:

Water well with soaker hoses during dry and hot spells.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use Slow Release (6 Month) Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Apply Miracle Gro Liquid Fertilizer every two weeks.

Harvest Tips:

Harvest hot peppers when fully mature using garden scissors, so you don't damage the plant. Pick peppers as they mature to encourage new buds to form.

PVY – Potato Virus Y

Type: Virus - Potyvirus

Potato Virus Y is a disease that affects the growth of peppers. Symptoms include green mosaic on leaves, leaf malformation, and leaf mottling. There may be severe stunting of the plants, and sometimes death of plants. The virus can cause substantial crop loss. The virus is transmitted by aphids. The virus survives for long periods in infected weeds. Mild winter temperatures favor survival of the virus, thus the disease can be greater the following spring. The infected plants should be removed and burned to avoid further infestation. Plan on using a 3 year crop rotation and avoid planting in the same location, year after year. Insecticides for aphids early in the season can control the disease. Keep the fields weed free. The best option is to use disease resistant varieties.

This jalapeno has been one of our staples for a few years...
It runs very consistent mild heat in my garden and we usually pickle a couple of gallons in pint and quart jars. All of our friends comment on quality of taste and looks of uniform size fruit in the jar. Experimenting with a few new ones from the Chili Institute in Las Cruces, NM., but tam is still the overall favorite.
