60 days. Brassica oleracea. (F1) Gypsy Broccoli. The strong uniform plant produces excellent yields of large blue green 8" diameter dome shaped broccoli. It has excellent flavor. Great for fresh use in salads, steamed, and stir fry. It has the ability to thrive in many different environments. It does well on hot summer days, cool autumn days, in less than stellar soil, and holds well in the field. Heat Tolerant. An excellent choice for home gardens, farmer’s markets, market growers, open production, and commercial production. Disease Resistant: DM.

Broccoli Seed Planting Information:

Broccoli does best when temperatures remain between 40 F and 70 F during the growing period. Temperatures below 25 F can damage or kill broccoli. Spring planting should occur as soon as soil can be worked and after last frost, and fall planting done 10 to 12 weeks before first frost. In most areas broccoli grows best if planted in late summer so it can mature during cool periods. Plants can grow 2 ft tall.

Soil Requirements:

Requires fertile soil with plenty of nitrogen and calcium with some lime. Apply much and grass clippings, or straw around base of plant.

Water Requirements:

Keep well watered or plant will have premature heading and flowering.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use RootBlast, Vegetable Alive, and Slow Release Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Periodically apply Miracle Gro.

Harvest Tips:

When you begin to see the buds spread out, it is time to harvest. Cut heads with sharp knife.

DM – Downy Mildew

Scientific Name: Peronospora farinosa, Peronospora parasitica, Pseudoperonospora cubensis

Type: Fungus

Downy mildew is a fungal disease that affects the growth of beets, broccoli, cantaloupes & melons, cauliflower, cucumbers, spinach, Swiss chard, and watermelons. Downy Mildew is most serious for cucumbers, which can drop dead in a week and stop producing any fruit to harvest. The disease affects both seedlings and mature plants.The infected leaves are retarded in growth, turn yellow then brown, and turn downward. A white to gray color mold appears on the underside of the leaves. The leaves will wilt and eventually die. The disease can spread rapidly under favorable conditions and infect the entire field. The infected plants should be removed and burned to avoid further infestation. The disease is favorable when temperatures are 58-72 F and usually occur in early spring and autumn in cooler weather when moisture and humidity are very high. Fungicides can help manage the disease. Good air circulation and increasing space between the plants can help control and prevent the disease, so use wide plant spacing to promote drying of the leaves. The best option is to use disease resistant varieties.
