85 days. Brassica oleracea. Open Pollinated. Waltham 29 Broccoli. The plant produces very flavorful heads of dark blue green broccoli. The head averages 5 to 6 inches in diameter. Excellent for spring planting midseason, or fall planting. This variety does extremely well on the East Coast and Pacific Northwest of the United States. Excellent choice for home gardens. Developed in the 1950s by the University of Massachusetts, Waltham, Massachusetts, USA. United States Department of Agriculture, NSL 6300.

Broccoli Seed Planting Information:

Broccoli does best when temperatures remain between 40 F and 70 F during the growing period. Temperatures below 25 F can damage or kill broccoli. Spring planting should occur as soon as soil can be worked and after last frost, and fall planting done 10 to 12 weeks before first frost. In most areas broccoli grows best if planted in late summer so it can mature during cool periods. Plants can grow 2 ft tall.

Soil Requirements:

Requires fertile soil with plenty of nitrogen and calcium with some lime. Apply much and grass clippings, or straw around base of plant.

Water Requirements:

Keep well watered or plant will have premature heading and flowering.

Fertilizer Requirements:

Use RootBlast, Vegetable Alive, and Slow Release Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Periodically apply Miracle Gro.

Harvest Tips:

When you begin to see the buds spread out, it is time to harvest. Cut heads with sharp knife.

1st time planting broccoli and was surprised to see hoe easy it is to grow just have to watch the bugs, but man the plants are huge . Will grow more this fall in zone 8 here it is getting hot already in mid may.

This was the first broccoli I started planting over 15 years ago and have grown it on and off since in western MN. I plant from seed in late June, 1/4 inch deep in soil with a pH of 7.9 and available N at least 100 lbs. per acre. The first cutting yields 6-9" heads in early September with recurring side shoots. The heads must be watched closely just prior to harvest since they will flower quickly--I call the time between the budding time to the time which they flower, "the holding time." In this variety, the holding time is very short especially as compared to a variety like Pac-man. It is ideally suited to a smaller garden incorporating staggered plantings from mid-June to early July. It has excellent flavor, a dependable and good producer, and the seed is relatively inexpensive.
